安装了输入法、浏览器等Google程序的Windows用户可能会留意到后台多出了一个“Google Update”的进程，对于这种做法RMS一定会视之为陷阱，Google也可能听到了用户的抱怨，现在它宣布Google Update开源。
Google Update采用Apache License 2.0许可证，以Omaha为代号发布源代码。Omaha的功能主要是在不干扰用户和不中断功能的情况下自动更新，在后台自动检查有无更新，Google 表示这一切都是为了让用户有更好的体验。现在它公开源代码是为了提高透明度，允许用户控制更新进程，以及增强Omaha的功能。此外其它软件开发者也能重 新利用Omaha的代码。更多可查阅源代码，开发者启动指南和参与讨论组。
